Unreliable Narrator

Kristen Elizabeth Donoghue-Stanford

Medium: Journal, Black Ink, Right Hand

19-04-2021 – 23-04-2021 -  Triangle Gallery

A journal written and drawn with the artist's non-dominant hand. The work conveys an unreliable narration of memories taken from the artist life, but told as if happening in the present. The memories are presented in non-linear order and detail instances between the years of 2006 to 2021. The work highlights the binaries between past and present existence and how truths can shift through the passage of time. The work echoes themes of classic Gothic literature which utilized the trope of “unreliable narrator” to characterize the suffering of heroines and villainesses throughout their legacy to deny them agency and their own truth.
